What else happened when the world was locked down?

The announcement on Wednesday that the UK economy is now officially in recession has come as no surprise, with the news in the first half of 2020 dominated naturally enough by Covid. The financial news has been mainly centred around its effects, from the dramatic collapse โ€“ and equally dramatic recovery โ€“ of the market – to Chancellor Sunakโ€™s exciting minibudget designed to get the economy rolling again.

Where are we now?

The lockdown is at last being unlocked, and many of us are making full use of the opportunity to enjoy the simple pleasures we have been missing. A drink in our local, or a meal in our favourite restaurant or a trip to the โ€˜non-essentialโ€™ shops. But as the masks and the injunctions to keep our distance remind us, Covid-19 has not gone away.
